Chapter 8: Friedrich Nietzsche and Michael Jackson
Grand Award Winner
46th Annual Delta Exhibition

Tom Richard
The paintings by Tom Richard make reference to "low" art sources, citing the quality of line and form of animation and comic books. The use of color and a very evident way of painting allow the artwork to be attractive, playful, and fun.The laughability of the work/subject/content is evident. This, however, goes beyond a quickness into something more impulsive, reflective, or abject.
His work utilizes fragments; fragments of narratives which are taken from stories of personal history or myth. The images they contain are often arranged to relate to the viewing of narrative visual information. It is this fragmentary nature which encourages the viewer to become an active participant in the artistic process. Through concrete juxtapositions, and at other times fluctuating combinations of images, the viewer is encouraged to respond and, in a sense, complete the piece.
Tom Richard is a Professor of Art at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Richard has exhibited his artwork in varied locations, including solo and group exhibitions in New York City, San Francisco, New Orleans, Knoxville, Chicago and Baton Rouge. Richard has been chosen by jurors around the country for special recognition on many occasions. His entry that received the Grand Award in the prestigious 46th annual Delta Exhibition sponsored by the Arkansas Arts Center was a career high point that was followed by an invitational solo exhibit at the AAC in Little Rock.
